CURRENT NEWS

Data-driven science is the only way to beat COVID-19

The bad news is obvious: COVID-19-related deaths have surpassed 200,000 and infection is still spreading rapidly, and a second wave this fall is all but certain. But there is important good news obscured by these grim facts: We have the tools to manage new outbreaks and more quickly develop treatments than at any other time in human history.

Why? Because governments around the world, in concert with private philanthropies, universities and biotech industries, have invested over the past decades in science: epidemiological models of pandemics, molecular studies of viruses, and strategies to develop and deploy new technologies to treat emerging threats. It is also because there are protocols for well-scripted, meticulously-controlled clinical trials to yield safe and effective treatments and vaccines.

To best position us for a second wave this fall and winter, we need to stay the course and stick with the scientific process. In the case of COVID-19, the catch is that we still lack ample and reliable data. And it is precise data — carefully, rigorously, scientifically attained — that is the key to minimizing further loss of life and damage to the economy. If we proceed without the right data, in a mad dash to complete this process quickly, we’re likely to fail.

We Work for Health Delaware is an effort to promote the significant social and economic value of the biopharmaceutical and life sciences sectors in our state. Our partnership includes biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, as well as state and local chambers of commerce, academic and research institutions, labor, patient advocate groups, physicians and healthcare providers. Together, our mission is to drive innovation, research, and development to new cures.

The biopharmaceutical sector is the foundation of one of Delaware’s most dynamic innovation and business ecosystems. Not only does the industry invest heavily in the research and development of new treatments and cures, but it also generates high-quality jobs, powers economic output and exports for the U.S. economy and sustain a very large-scale supply chain.

Supporting High-Quality Jobs in Delaware
  • The innovative biopharmaceutical sector directly supported 9,387 jobs in Delaware in 2015. These jobs are often high-skill, high-wage professions.
  • The industry also supported another 23,833 jobs indirectly, for a total of about 33,220 jobs across the Delaware economy. These additional jobs are with vendors and suppliers such as construction companies and I.T. companies, and jobs generated by the sector’s employees such as daycare centers and restaurants.
  • Delaware workers whose jobs were supported by the biopharmaceutical sector paid a total of $480 million in personal taxes in 2015—$421.4 million in federal taxes and $59.1 million in state taxes.
