Join our partners at the Greater Baltimore Committee this Friday!
Join the Greater Baltimore Committee for a conversation with Debra L. McCurdy, the new President of Baltimore City Community College. She assumed the Presidency of BCCC in the spring 2019 semester.

For the past 11 years, McCurdy has served as President of Rhodes State College in Lima, Ohio where she oversaw the transformation of the institution as it expanded its programs to include associate of arts and associate of science degrees. The college also expanded its reach into the region through distance and online programs and developed a manufacturing consortium to provide skill enhancement and training to serve 26 companies. Bringing a strategic vision for program development and growth, she was instrumental in securing increased grant funding and maintaining fiscal stability.

McCurdy previously served for nine years as Provost and Chief Operating Officer for the Dunwoody Campus at Georgia Perimeter College and for seven years as Assistant and Associate Provost at Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta, Georgia. Earlier positions included serving as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Paul Quinn College in Texas and as Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs at Brandeis University in Massachusetts.

McCurdy earned bachelor of science, master of education and doctoral degrees from Bowling Green State University in Ohio.

Launched in 2009, We Work For Health – Maryland is an effort to promote the significant social and economic value of the biopharmaceutical and life sciences sectors in our state. Our partnership includes biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, as well as state and local chambers of commerce, academic and research institutions, labor, patient advocate groups, physicians and healthcare providers. Together, our mission is to drive innovation, research and development to new cures.

The biopharmaceutical sector is the foundation of one of Maryland’s most dynamic innovation and business ecosystems. Not only does the industry invest heavily in the research and development of new treatments and cures, it also generates high quality jobs, powers economic output and exports for the U.S. economy and sustains a very large-scale supply chain.

Clinical trials performed by the biopharmaceutical industry in Maryland have an enormous impact on patients and the state's economy.  A report entitled, “Research in Your Backyard:  Developing Cures, Creating Jobs,” specifies that 829 clinical trials are currently underway in the state creating hundreds of millions of dollars in economic activity and helping Marylanders across the state fight debilitating diseases.  There have been 5,910 clinical trials in Maryland since 2004 targeting diseases and conditions like asthma, arthritis, cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer’s disease. 

In 2013 alone, more than 25,000 Marylanders participated in clinical trials in Maryland that had an economic impact on the state estimated at more than $527 million.  And, in 2015, Maryland biopharmaceutical companies supported the generation of $27.5 billion in economic activity and 111,700 jobs throughout the state.
