In honor of National Nurses Week, the Brain Injury Association of Delaware would like to highlight a very special Nurse. Sharon Lyons, MSN raised 3 sons, as a single parent, from ages 7, 9, and 11 while attending school to get her Associates Degree in Nursing. She went back to school to obtain her undergraduate degree while working full-time and being a full-time single parent. After receiving her undergraduate degree, she chose to move ahead into the graduate program and received her graduate degree in 1999 (all while being a single parent and working full-time). Sharon also received her certification as a Registered Rehabilitation Nurse (CRRN). Sharon has been a BIAD Board member since 2012 and serves as the current Board President (since 2015). Sharon retired from DuPont Hospital for Children in 2012, where she worked in the Department of Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine. She has 12 years of experience as a primary staff nurse, 2 years as a Rehab Specialty Nurse, and coordinated the Intrathecal Baclofen Program with Orthopedics. Sharon served as a Rehabilitation Advanced Practical Nurse from 1999-2012 and helped create the Concussion Program at DuPont Hospital for Children. Sharon has spoken at numerous conferences and has supported and educated many families affected by brain injury. She continues to participate in community and veteran groups, advocate for brain injury awareness and services, educate the community, and runs a support group for brain injury survivors and their caregivers. Sharon's care and concern for those affected by brain injury do not go unnoticed. She is an integral part of the Brain Injury Association of Delaware and we salute her for her past and continued efforts in assisting Delawareans.
