Daniel Atkins joined Delaware’s Community Legal Aid Society Inc. at the age of 24 as a lawyer.

Twenty-nine years later, and as the nonprofit’s executive director, Atkins said he feels like he was raised by the nonprofit. 

“I went to law school to do this work and I feel so privileged to be able to do it,” Atkins said. “I can’t think of a higher calling than this. We comfort the troubled and trouble the comfortable.” 

Atkins was named executive director of the legal aid agency four years ago. Under his leadership, the Community Legal Aid Society has grown to 60 staff members across the state. This year, the organization won a Top Workplaces award for leadership at the small company level. 

The nonprofit has provided free civil legal services to Delawareans since 1946. Its lawyers take on many types of cases, from access to government benefits and subsidized housing, helping victims of domestic violence, and representing recent immigrants. 

Co-workers at the nonprofit said they appreciate Atkins’ dedication to his work, and that he runs the organization with an open door policy and commitment to communication with the statewide staff.
