OCTOBER: A NOTE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

News ~ Oct 21, 2019 1:54  am
You’ve probably been hearing a lot about the 2020 Census in the news over the past few months. You may not know how important the Census is to organizations like Inter-Faith Housing Alliance.

Every 10 years, the Census is done to learn about the characteristics of people who live in the United States. It’s how we are able to know things like the local poverty rate, changes in economic inequality, housing conditions in neighborhoods, the median household income, and much more.

You probably didn’t know that Pennsylvania was the second most undercounted state in the 2010 Census. Or that the Ambler area has been historically undercounted. This means that programs like Inter-Faith may have access to less than our fair share of resources to address the needs in our community. When the count is not accurate, communities like ours get less funding for housing, education, community facilities, and other important programs. And we know that the people we serve every day have real needs that require access to these resources.

We’re teaming up with local community groups and the MontCo Complete Count Committee to make sure the Ambler area is fully represented in the 2020 Census. Partners include MontCo SAAC, Mattie Dixon Community Cupboard, the Wissahickon Public Library and our local faith community.

So when it’s your turn to fill out that 2020 Census form, remember that you’re not just providing information to our government—you’re also helping local community groups address community needs. You can help us get an accurate count by telling your friends, family, neighbors, and colleagues how important the 2020 Census is to our community. We appreciate your support!

24 HOURS OF GIVING ON OCTOBER 25

WILL YOU JOIN US?

News ~ Oct 21, 2019 1:50  am
In the United States, 1 in 19 children experiences homelessness before reaching age 6. These children live in communities across the country, where their neighbors are unaware that family homelessness is happening in their backyard. The impact of homelessness for children extends far beyond a lack of housing: they are eight times more likely to repeat a grade, three times more likely to be placed in special education programs, and seven times more likely to commit suicide.

This October 25th, we are asking for your help as we work to make this crisis more visible in our communities.

On October 25, Inter-Faith Housing Alliance is taking part in Family Promise Giving Day, a 24-hour day of giving to help families in Montgomery County that are experiencing homelessness. The event is sponsored by Family Promise, a national organization of shelters like Inter-Faith’s—shelters that partner with houses of worship to provide emergency housing and support to families in crisis.

We’re hoping to raise $1,500 during this 24-hour period. Every dollar you donate will go directly to supporting Inter-Faith’s programs that assist our neighbors experiencing homelessness.

Helping Single Working Parents Succeed

Please Support North Star Chester County!

News ~ Sep 16, 2019 1:36  am
ABOUT
We were founded by a committee of representatives from the Religious Council of Greater West Chester and Incorporated in 1993 to help our less fortunate neighbors, regardless of any religious affiliation. Since that time, North Star has helped hundreds of families of single working parents throughout all of Chester County. More than half of those have received rental assistance in addition to extensive case management, keeping their families clean and safe and out of homeless shelters.

OUR MISSION
North Star of Chester County, formerly Interfaith Housing Assistance Corporation of Chester County, guides Chester County’s single working parents with dependent children, who are at risk of homelessness, toward stability and financial independence. We help our participant families remain in clean, safe, affordable housing as they work to secure their future through a structured program of financial assistance, mentoring and supportive services.

Single parents who stay in our program for three full years emerge stable and proudly able to provide for their families.

WHO WE SERVE
We are dedicated to helping an underserved portion of the population succeed: the working poor. Participants in our program are hard-working single mothers and fathers, trying to raise their families in one of the most expensive counties in the state. Working parents accepted into our program benefit from our staff’s expertise in all facets of homelessness prevention.

1.Can be either single mothers or fathers with their dependent children living with them
2.Can receive services for up to three years
3.Can meet with our case managers after hours and on weekends, when it is most convenient for them
4.Receive personal financial coaching, attend workshops, and have access to services of other agencies who specialize in job skills training, free income tax preparation, savings programs, and more
