Connecting Generations

Honoring Dorrell Green

Join us at this year's Evening at the Contemporary as we honor Dorrell Green

News ~ Sep 09, 2019 19:03  pm
Connecting Generations is proud to honor Dorrell Green, Superintendent of the Red Clay Consolidated School District, at this year's "Evening at the Contemporary" fundraising event.

Dorrell Green has dedicated his career to serving children across New Castle County, both as a teacher and as an educational leader for three of Delaware's largest public school districts.

Green's career in education began 20 years ago in the City of Wilmington, when he was a teacher at Bancroft Elementary School and Stubbs Elementary School. After honing his skills in the classroom, he embarked on a path to leadership, serving as an Assistant Principal at Stubbs and then as the Principal of Harlan Elementary School. Green made a natural transition to district leadership in 2012, when he was named Director of Elementary Education and Title I Services and then Assistant Superintendent for the Brandywine School District. In that role, he led district operations in the areas of transportation, discipline, nutrition, facilities, finance and human resources.

Green joined the Delaware Department of Education in 2017 as the Director of Innovation and Improvement. He currently serves as Superintendent of the Red Clay Consolidated School District.

Green earned his degree in elementary teaching education from the University of Delaware in 1998 and his master's degree in educational leadership and administration from UD in 2004. He is currently pursuing a Doctor of Education degree in Organizational Leadership from Wilmington University.

Known as one of the finest defensive backs and strongest team leaders in Blue Hens history, Green was inducted into the University of Delaware Athletics Hall of Fame in 2019.

A resident of Wilmington, he and his wife, Bonita, have a son (Jordan) and two daughters (Jada and Jasmine).

Congratulations to Superintendent Dorrell Green!

Become a Creative Mentor!

All it takes is about an hour a week and the desire to make a difference in the life of a child!

News ~ Sep 09, 2019 18:58  pm
A Creative Mentor is an adult or high school student who volunteers to make a difference in the life of a child by spending time with them in their schools.

Studies have shown that a mentor relationship can be one of the most important relationships in a child’s development. It doesn’t take any special skills or degrees to be a mentor. All it takes is a caring adult who is committed to helping a child become all he or she can be.

It involves listening, sharing, and showing the child that there is one person who takes the time out of their busy lives to be there for him or her. The greatest gift a mentor can give is his or her time.

How It Works:

All Creative Mentors are required to go through an application process, including reference checks, a criminal background check, and completion of our mentor training. It takes approximately a month from the day of application to the day you’re placed with a child.

Once your application has been approved and you’ve completed the required mentor training session, Connecting Generations will forward your information to the school you requested and notify them that your application process is complete. You should hear from the school within two weeks, but if you don’t just give us a call and we’ll help to sort it out!

Both Connecting Generations and your school mentor coordinator will remain available to support you during your mentoring relationship. We are also very interested in your feedback, so we’ll be in touch periodically to follow up with you. Thank you so much for your interest in Connecting Generations and strengthening our community, one child at a time!

Seasons of Respect

Learn more about this interactive program!

News ~ Sep 09, 2019 18:54  pm
Seasons of Respect is a hands-on, interactive program that focuses on helping children learn how giving respect creates a safe learning environment that can lead to improved self-esteem, confidence, and academic success. As a matter of fact, after participating in the workshop:
  • 93% of students stated that they now understand the difference between respectful behavior and disrespectful.
  • 90% of the students now believe that we all need to behave respectfully towards each other.
  • 75% would like the rest of their school to experience a Seasons of Respect workshop.
We implement the program through our in-school workshop series for 4th, 5th, and 7th grades, our Respect Through the Arts after school program, and our new Character Climb Peer Helping program.

This character education program supports efforts to improve school climate, enhances the Positive Behavior Support Programs (PBS) in schools, and is a bully prevention tool to assist schools in addressing Delaware’s anti bullying laws. Since piloted in 2006, the program has grown to serve over 16,000 in 54 public schools throughout Delaware!
