Speaking Out for Children's Happiness

Social emotional developmental levels are critically important and cannot be pushed aside.

News ~ Nov 15, 2019 16:21  pm
Nov. 12, 2019, Psychology Today - The research is clear. Academic training in kindergarten has no long-term benefit. In fact, it may cause long-term harm. It does not reduce the education gap between the rich and the poor, which is the usual reason offered for such training. It slightly increases academic test-scores in first grade, but by third grade the benefit is lost and, according to some of the best studies, by fourth grade those subjected to academic kindergartens are doing worse—academically as well as socially and emotionally—than those who were in play-based kindergartens (for some of the evidence, see here).

The views of kindergarten teachers are also clear (see here). I have spoken at many early education conferences over the past several years, and at each one I heard from teachers about unhappy little children who are being deprived of play and forced to do increasing amounts of “seat work.” I also hear regularly from kindergarten teachers who are resigning or taking early retirement because they see that the policies they are forced to enforce are harming children. We are losing our best teachers because they are the ones who are most likely to see what is happening and least likely to tolerate it.

So why do we continue on this trend of depriving little children of play and joyful group activities, from which they learn so much, and subjecting them ever more to meaningless, shallow “academic work,” from which they learn so little? The answer, as far as I can tell, is that the politicians who make education policy and many of the administrators who enforce it know little about children or learning, and don’t pay attention to the two groups of people who do: those who conduct research on child development, and the teachers who see directly how the policies affect children.

Celebrating 10 Years of Service!

Serving the Mid-Atlantic region for a decade

News ~ Aug 09, 2019 20:35  pm
This November, All the Difference celebrates 10 years of serving the Mid-Atlantic region!

As we are able through resources and trained, experienced staff, All The Difference Inc. will expand into more locations reaching more children and families with needs. As a separate vision, we will have enough resources to affect and work with families that could otherwise not afford to receive private therapy services for their children. We plan to influence the way children are viewed and educated currently to make the children with developmental differences productive, happy members of our society.

Please help us continue our mission. With your donation, you will bring more smiles and hope to children and families.

Your donations go directly to support our mission, allowing children and families to receive the best care possible. Thank you for your support along the way. You truly do "make all the difference."

Kristina's Story

Learn why we do what we do!

News ~ Aug 09, 2019 20:27  pm
Kristina’s area of interest with the DIR therapeutic model (floortime) is one close to her heart. It began with finding one of her children to have developmental difference and needing interventions which could not be found easily within the local therapeutic systems currently in place. After a great deal of research; Kristina found a model that worked (and continues to work) wonders for their child.

Kristina along with her husband, Darren Stroh, sought out the services of Stanley Greenspan, M.D. Kristina holds her mastery certificate in DIR Theory. She is also certified in Therapeutic Listening and is working towards her Interactive Metronome certification. They have been and continue to receive training from the DIR Support Services center in Bethesda, Maryland by Jake Greenspan and Tim Bleecker.

Further research enabled them to find a wonderful Occupational Therapist, Gretchen McDonnell, who began working with the family. Gretchen, too, saw the potential for gain in their child. It was an amazing experience. Not only did she intrinsically believe what they believed regarding the power of learning through play; she saw what they saw in their child. Hope had been restored and wonderful things began to happen. Gretchen McDonnell has, and continues to, receive training under the DIR Model with Jake Greenspan and Tim Bleecker.
