EVEN MORE MEDITATION ISSUES!

Blog ~ Dec 27, 2019 20:03  pm
Our meditation group sat yesterday as we do every month in the home of our good friend, Magdalena. Once again we were graced with her beautiful Ikebana as a centerpiece to our small community.  Alstroemeria, or “Lily of the Incas,” is a hardy perennial, growing in its native Andes.  It needs at least 6 hours of sunlight daily but can survive to temperatures as low as 23 degrees F.

The work of mindfulness needs similar care.  Like our friend Alstroemeria, there are certain qualities that must be attended to in order for our practice to survive and thrive.  We must have intentionality if we are to be mindful.  That is, there’s a need to bring focus to each day, each hour, and eventually each moment.  Our formal practice helps us to look into the nature of our minds, learn how it works.  Am I distressed by events, or is it the thought I am having about an event that is distressing me?  Not all events that lead to distress are actually distressing; it’s good to know the actual source, so we can respond with skillfulness.  With the intention to be mindful throughout our day firmly established informal practice, we are ready to bring the equanimity of a compassionate observer to each moment of the day.

Another quality that our practice needs in order to survive and thrive is our attitude of radical acceptance.  My first reaction is often to have aversion to what life is presenting to me in this moment.  I find it so difficult to allow my body and mind to wrap around reality as it is occurring and commit myself to work with it as it actually is, rather than rail against it because it isn’t what I KNOW it should be.  And thus I suffer until my practice restores my acceptance.

This sitting, such a simple act, always available in the moment our intentionality and acceptance are restored, becomes our life.  Like the Alstroemeria our lives abide moment to moment if we are open-minded and open-hearted.  I felt tremendous joy yesterday gazing at the Alstroemeria. It needed nothing.  There’s was nothing I could say or do that could make it better, or change it in any way.  It was sufficient, just like each of us are sufficient, if only we have the intentionality and acceptance to realize it.

Off to run now.  Good morning sit, a good run, maybe a good book. What a great day it is!

PS  I also learned that Alstroemeria are very commonly used in bouquets, especially at weddings. So this is probably not the FIRST Alstroemeria I’ve ever met (literally), but it sure felt like it!

Mindfulness in Physics Class

Blog ~ Aug 06, 2019 14:32  pm
Who knew that students could learn mindfulness from a physics class?

Ryan Shelton, a teacher at Padua Academy, introduced mindfulness to his physics class and students have been raving about it ever since. Shelton starts each class with three minutes of guided meditation. Turns out just three minutes is all students need to relax, focus, and get ready for class.

MEET THE TEACHER
Shelton shared that the first 30 years of his life “were dominated by [his] thoughts.” But since 2010, he has been meditating daily and has found the practice to help him “quiet [his] mind, listen to [his] heart, and connect to the world around [him] with understanding and compassion.”
Ryan Shelton

MORE MINDFUL STUDENTS
For many students, Shelton’s physics class was the first time they were ever exposed to meditation. Riley H. shared “I had never experienced meditation before Mr. Shelton introduced it to me in class. Being a junior in high school with an extremely busy schedule, meditation has allowed me to let go and feel relaxed about all my struggles and worries.”
                                                                          Riley H.

Other students had heard of meditation but never found it to be useful for themselves. Jess C., a Padua Student, “…thought it was a waste of time” and could never “…get what the whole thing was about.” After Shelton’s class, she realized that taking just three minutes to meditate before class, “can help you feel more relaxed, collected and focused on the task at hand.”
                                                                             Jess C.

Many students have now adopted meditation into their daily lives after learning it in Shelton’s class. Naja M. shared: “These short meditations sparked an interest in me. I now use meditation in my daily life, in the morning and before bed.”
                                                                         Naja M.

Another student, Maggie P., said that she “started to meditate after long stressful days of school and at very stressful times of my life just to calm myself enough to focus on my next task at hand.”
                                                                      Maggie P.

EVIDENCE-BASED RESULTS

Rising expectations of students in K-12 schools increase demands on their attention and executive functioning, but students are rarely taught how to pay attention. Mindfulness has been defined as a nonjudgmental, non-elaborative awareness of the present moment, an awareness that allows for acknowledgment and acceptance of feelings, thoughts and sensations as they arise (Bishop, 2004). Holzel and colleagues (2011) suggested that the benefits of mindfulness could be attributed to two distinct but interrelated components. The first is a regulation of attention focused on immediate experience, while the second involves “approaching one’s experiences with an orientation of curiosity, openness, and acceptance, regardless of their valence and desirability”

Three minutes of meditation at the beginning of class has changed the lives of Shelton’s students for the better. It begs the question, “What would happen if more teachers introduced mindfulness into their classrooms?”
If you would like to talk to Ryan Shelton about how mindfulness is helping his classroom, you can connect with him at rshelton@paduaacademy.org.
